Our Analysis and Test Results
In every metric, the Eddy+ Renew performed very well. From its simple features to its lightweight design, this recycled bottle is a high-value choice. The smaller sizes fit nicely into cup holders, though the 32-ounce that we tested this time around is less accommodating. In terms of durability, we had very few complaints with this bottle; in fact, it's one of the lighter hard-sided bottles in this review. With a few simple parts that are fairly easy to clean, the Eddy+ has many qualities that impress, all with an affordable price tag.
Ease of Use
An update on the classic CamelBak Eddy bottle, the Eddy+ Renew has all the same great features as its predecessor. CamelBak could be credited with popularizing the straw-style lid that is now seen across the board in most other water bottle brands. The Eddy was truly the first of its kind, and the Eddy+ Renew is a fantastic update to the classic design but with 50% recycled materials. We appreciate the simplicity of the flip-cap straw and especially appreciate how the bottle does not leak when the straw is stored. This feature inspires confidence when throwing the Eddy+ into a backpack for a short day hike or a commute.
The main features of this bottle are integrated into the cap. The lid has a straw, screw cap lid, and flip spout. The pieces can easily be disassembled for cleaning, and the mouth is wide enough to easily fit a bottle brush. With a straightforward, integrated carrying handle, the feature set on the Eddy+ is fairly simple and easy to use, which we love.
This is a strong bottle with a well-made body and cap that can endure a lot without breaking. In our drop tests, the Eddy+ Renew fared well with only some minor scuffs and scrapes, even when dropped directly on its lid.
The spout and straw didn't leak at all, inspiring confidence both when carrying the bottle in a backpack and when using it computer-side. This bottle could, of course, shatter if dropped far enough. But overall we feel confident that this bottle will survive much more often than it will fail.
Here, the CamelBak Eddy+ Renew really shines — this bottle is super lightweight. Among the hard-sided bottles in this review, the Eddy Renew is one of the lightest, with a measured weight of 7.1 ounces. In terms of weight per ounce, this bottle weighs only 0.22 ounces per fluid ounce. With this lightweight design, the Eddy Renew is a fantastic bottle to take on day hikes and camping trips.
The Eddy Renew did surprisingly well in this metric, despite its rubber bite valve and plastic straw. When filled with electrolyte drink mix, it only took a few rinses and a swish of the bottle brush to clean it out.
Perhaps if used with a rotating mix of flavored drinks, this bottle would carry flavors throughout the different uses, but if used only occasionally with flavored beverages, the Renew does just fine.
Should you buy the CamelBak Eddy+ Renew?
If you are looking for a bottle that you can take anywhere — from work to the mountains — the CamelBak Eddy+ Renew is an awesome choice. The straw-style design doesn't leak, and it makes drinking fun! We loved using this durable, partially recycled plastic bottle throughout the day, no matter what we were doing.
What Other Water Bottles Should You Consider?
If the straw design doesn't suit your fancy but you still want something lightweight and affordable, try the Nalgene Wide-Mouth as an option. Alternatively, if you're looking for a bottle that is not made of plastic, but has similar features, check out the Klean Kanteen TKWide] or the Simple Modern Summit.
