Our Verdict

If you're seeking quality that isn't cost-prohibitive, look no further than the Under Armour UA Streaker Run. While it isn't the very cheapest shirt we have reviewed, it performs alongside the highest-tier models, outperforming many of them in comfort and breathability. We love how soft it is, the thoughtful body mapping of breathable fabrics, and the way it effectively thermoregulates. It's not often that one of the best shirts ends up also being one of the most affordable, so we recognize the Streaker Run with an award for its excellent price-to-performance ratio.

Our Analysis and Test Results

We recognize that this shirt is more expensive than previous Best Buy winners, but when we assessed the values of all of the shirts in our lineup, we noticed that the UA Streaker Run was the outlier for performance compared with cost. This shirt is soft and has quality seams, contributing to its comfort and durability. It has a large back panel that provides better ventilation in that key area. But most notably, it feels good and looks good when out running or hitting the gym.

Comfort

A poly-stretch blend, flatlock seams, and two different weave patterns make the mapped-out fit of the Streaker Run really comfortable. For this metric, we start with the initial fit and then consider stretch, fabric, movement, and compatibility with layers or a pack. The initial fit of the Streaker Run is excellent. Kudos to the designers, this medium hits the perfect note for running and casual wear without any excess material.

The Streaker has 7% elasterall blended with polyester throughout most of the shirt, providing enough stretch to move with each stride, while retaining the overall shape. This poly blend also contributes to the soft hand feel. The back diamond gridded mesh is made of 4% elasterall blended with polyester, but the fabric weave still promotes more vertical stretch than elsewhere. Raglan sleeves move the shoulder seam off the top of the shoulder and lower down, increasing comfort when carrying a load.

A horizontal striped weave permits the Streaker Run to stretch primarily in two directions — horizontally throughout most of the shirt. On the back, a diamond-gridded weave permits four-way stretch and allows better ventilation. Flatlock stitching keeps the quality and comfort levels high, with the exception of one seam running across the back where the two fabrics come together. This is our biggest gripe with this otherwise excellent shirt. Why is this seam here? That slight flap of fabric makes layering less ideal and adds a noticeable seam when running with a hydration pack.

Breathability

Once again, the Streaker Run scored as high as any other shirt we tested. What makes it so breathable? A panel of slightly looser, diamond grid woven material extends along the back of the shirt from the bottom to the midsection of the back.

It's worth noting that the material throughout the rest of the shirt also breathes quite well. This back panel assists in dumping heat from the core and preventing excessive sweat build-up. During fast efforts on the track with increased arm swing and motion, we paid close attention to breathability, fabric bunching, shirt rotation, and chaffing — we were delighted that we didn't notice anything. And that's just what we are looking for, a shirt that has no noticeable points of discomfort. We can say that without a pack or layer over the top, the Streaker Run felt great.

Drying Speed

We conducted our drying test in the kitchen lab before going out and field testing, so all of the shirts had initial starting weights and weren't sullied before this detailed experiment. During this test, we realized how effective the UA Streaker Run is at rapidly drying. All of the sudden, we were holding this shirt with great anticipation to get some miles in. The Streaker Run only held 32% of its weight in water when saturated and was completely dry after 15 minutes. This tells us that the Streaker doesn't hold excessive water and can lose that water to evaporation rapidly.

Our kitchen science was correct: despite a middle-of-the-field weight, the Streaker performs better than average when it comes to rapid drying, thus keeping a runner comfortable through variable conditions. In addition to logging miles during the heat of the day, we tested this shirt during high-intensity interval training sessions, where we typically built up a serious sweat. This shirt didn't cling or get heavy across the back and dried out within 15 minutes.

On hot days, the Streaker Run performed as it did in the kitchen lab, completely drying out and feeling dry. We found ourselves hot and dry as opposed to cool because the looser diamond weave on the back of the shirt seemed to release all of the water vapor. We noticed this more than with any other shirt we tested. Typically, we want a shirt to hold just enough water vapor to cool down the back through evaporative heat loss, which is essential for thermoregulation.

Features & Versatility

A reflective logo on the left side of the chest and a centered 2" pattern of six reflective bars on the back offer visibility for morning outings before work. We with there were reflective accents on the sleeve as well.

We have already shared our thoughts about the unappealing seam across the back with the flap of fabric, so we won't rub it in much more. This back seam makes layering with the Streaker Run less comfortable and we fear that long days with a pack may cause chaffing. The longest outing we got in this shirt was just over four hours, and while we could feel the seem pressing against the back, we didn't experience excessive rubbing.

We liked using the Streaker Run with a pack, but the horizontal seam across the back gave us trepidation about chaffing during a longer effort.

The collar is tag-less and incorporates a soft strip of padded elastic to catch sweat, an attention to detail we expect from pricier shirts. Active biocide zinc microbes, which sound complex, are supposedly at work. The shirt remained odor-free after multiple runs and a few big days, so the subjective stink test tells us it works. One of the limiting factors of this shirt was the lack of UPF rating. All fabrics are about 8 UPF, providing some protection, but this seems like the most valuable feature a running shirt could have, and, unfortunately, this isn't a feature the Streaker offers.

Value

The Streaker Run presents an excellent value. You're not compromising any performance and you're getting a heck of a deal. We see this shirt appealing to the widest audience of any shirt we tested, as the fit is right for the gym and for competitive running. It looks good, is really nice against the skin, and it breathes and dries efficiently and effectively.

Conclusion

The UA Streaker Run stands out to us as the option we would recommend to our highly active friends who want a shirt that's a little more running-oriented. Across the board, it received high scores because it's a great performance running shirt. Our small gripe regarding the back seam is rooted in our desire to wear this shirt more and we just wish it didn't have it. Nonetheless, we plan to wear the Streaker Run regularly and think you will too.
